When my Jack Russell Terrier, Pup Pup, arrived in my life she was about 8 months old and was a plant chewer extraordinaire. Plus she hated me and any other living thing that intruded into her tight little world!
Allow me to back up a bit and explain just how I became keeper of the key to Pup Pup's heart. I had visited my sister (Ladybug) a few times and tried in vain to make friends with her furry friend who was originally known as "Baby". I love animals and they usually love me in return. But no matter how hard I tried to make friends, Baby would bark and run or simply growl a little warning if I got too close. But each time I came for a visit I would try again! Alas, Baby did not want to be acquainted with me and certainly did not want to be friends!
Fast forward a couple of months and Ladybug and I were chatting online and she mentioned that Baby was chewing up all efforts at landscaping as well as the potted plants. Ladybug was going to have to find a new home for Baby. I silently cheered as I had fallen in love with Baby the first time I laid eyes on her! I quickly volunteered to take her.
My mind was reeling a bit the next day as I thought to myself "How am I going to take in an animal that hates me?" . I simply set aside any doubts and had another chat with Ladybug to make arrangements to pick up my new family member.
A few days later I arrived at Ladybug's house with dog carrier and treats in hand, prepared for the worst but hoping for the best! After a sub sandwich lunch and some sour cream and onion chip bribes for Baby, Ladybug put Baby in the carrier and we began the journey homeward. Baby was about to become little sister to all the other creatures in my world.
Baby and I spent a few hours getting to know each other and she finally decided maybe I wasn't so bad. However, our peaceful afternoon changed when my hubby got home and Baby decided he was very "growl-worthy". And so Baby stayed as close as possible to me for the next few days. At one point I considered re-naming her "Shadow"!
After about a week things were good and Baby slowly evolved into "Pup Pup" . Maybe a month later Pup Pup was alpha dog in our house and it became Pup Pup's world!
I am always taking in creatures and we love the new additions while mourning the loss of the elder ones. It's been about 2 years since my beloved Pup Pup shuttled her way into my heart and my home. But no matter how many newbies enter the door, my dear doggy makes it clear each time just how things are - "It's Pup Pup's World and you better not forget it!".
